New proprietary technology dramatically improves NOx function in catalytic converters.

Our Base-Metal Activated Rhodium Support (BMARS™) technology has been developed to improve the functionality of the rhodium used in automotive three-way catalysts (TWCs). Specifically, the nanoscale material enables the promotion of rhodium into a more active state – for dramatically improved conversion of oxides of nitrogen (NOx).

Why is efficient NOx function important? Increasingly stringent emission regulations present a challenge for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) – to meet regulatory mandates while controlling costs. As OEMs trend toward smaller engines for greater fuel economy, they employ turbo charging and gasoline direct injection (GDI) to ensure proper engine performance. This affects the engine-out exhaust gas temperatures and thus the performance of the catalytic converter in reducing pollutants. Traditional methods to address the catalytic conversion performance would require increased usage of platinum group metals (PGMs), such as platinum, palladium and rhodium – all of which are susceptible to price volatility and supply constraints.

BMARS™ has significant potential for upgrading the NOx performance with no increase in rhodium loading or significantly decreasing the rhodium usage for the same performance. Rhodium is an essential component of emissions control on gasoline vehicles worldwide. In particular, its use has been essential in meeting the NOx conversion requirements of catalytic converters. Automotive OEMs spend approximately $1B per year on rhodium, according to information derived from Johnson Matthey’s PGM Market Report, November 2014 and the price of rhodium has historically been very volatile, having ranged between $890 and $10,100 per troy ounce between 2005 and 2015. With the upcoming transition from the US EPA’s Tier 2 to Tier 3 regulations, which requires an 80% reduction in NOx, rhodium usage in particular and the PGM usage in general is expected to increase significantly. CDTi’s new technology addresses this challenge head-on.

We are taking our expertise to a new level – proprietary advanced powders capability. Our world-class research and development teams designed BMARS™ as a specialty powder such that eventually it can be shipped and sold to coaters around the world for incorporation into liquid coatings and then applied onto catalytic converter devices locally near catalytic converter canning factories and auto assembly plants. We believe BMARs™ powder will provide OEMs worldwide with a cost-effective solution to meet increasingly stringent emission control standards.

We have filed U.S. patent applications on the use of BMARS™ technology and many more filings are anticipated.
