Executive Team

Dr. Bernhard Steiner
Chief Executive Officer

Dr. Steiner joined Clean Diesel September 14, 2004. Previously, Dr. Steiner held Executive director positions from 2003 at both Wayfinder Systems AB of Sweden, a navigation and location software development company, and OWR AG, a leading NBC protection solutions company. He served as a non-executive director at Wayfinder until 2008. From 1999 until 2003, Dr. Steiner was General Manager of the Software Solutions Group of Motorola, Inc., an electronics company. From 1994 until 1999 he was Chairman and Chief Executive of the NXT PLC Group of companies, Wharfedale and Mission, and from 1996 Group Managing Director of NXT PLC. Dr. Steiner, a graduate of the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland, during his business career also held executive sales and marketing positions at Canon, Sony and Amstrad PLC.

Tim Rogers
Executive Vice President – International

Prior to joining Clean Diesel in December 2003, Tim was Director of Marketing and Sales for ADAS Consulting Ltd, a former UK government agency, focusing on the living and growing environment and providing lead and policy consultancy to the UK government and industry. Previously, Tim worked 9 years for Associated Octel Ltd as Global Business Manager for their Specialty Fuel additives business. He later formed Octel's Emission Technology business unit developing new fuel-borne catalysts and setting up Adastra Ltd, a retrofit emission control company. Tim has been in the petrochemicals business for nearly 20 years. In that time he has worked for Exxon Chemicals and Ethyl Petroleum where he held roles in R&D, international sales and business management. Tim has a grounding in mechanical engineering, studying at the Brooks University in Oxford.

Dr. Walter Copan
Executive Vice President - American Operations and Chief Technology Officer

Previously Principal Licensing Executive, Technology Transfer, for the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) based in Golden, Colorado, Dr. Copan was responsible for commercialization of clean energy, energy efficiency and related technologies, through partnerships with industry, academia, and government. Prior to joining NREL, Dr. Copan was Managing Director, Technology Transfer and Licensing for The Lubrizol Corporation and also responsible for corporate venturing and new business development. During Dr. Copan’s 28-year career at Lubrizol he held leadership roles in R&D, product development, business unit management and strategy. Dr. Copan holds leadership positions in the Board of Licensing Executives Society. He completed his Ph.D. in physical chemistry at Case Western Reserve University and business studies at Harvard University.

Ann Ruple
Chief Financial Officer and Vice President - Administration

Ann was most recently Director of Financial Planning and Analysis of NCT Group, Inc., a U.S. publicly traded, high-tech company with a strong technology base, a position she held for more than eight years. Prior to NCT Group, Ann held various senior management positions in both private and publicly traded U.S. companies and brings extensive technology, merger and acquisition, and small cap experience to Clean Diesel. Ann is a CPA and passed the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination as a first-time candidate. She holds an MBA degree and her career foundation was at PriceWaterhouse, a Big Four accounting firm.

Charles W. Grinnell -
Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary

A general corporate legal practitioner with concentrations in securities law, mergers and acquisitions and taxation,  Charles has been a Director and Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Clean Diesel since its inception in 1994. He has held senior legal positions with several other public companies in the oil and gas, engineered products, automotive parts and cleantech fields. A member of the state and federal bars of New York and Connecticut, Charles holds a JD degree from Columbia University School of law and an LLM (Tax) degree from the University of Bridgeport School of Law. He entered practice initially with the New York City law firm of Dewey, Ballantine, Bushby, Palmer & Wood.
