Off-Road: Material Handling

Let us help you reduce NOx emissions and stabilize costs with reduced platinum group metals (PGMs).

There are more than 90,000 off-road large spark ignition engines in California. Many of these engines have no emission controls and some remain in operator fleets for decades. A single uncontrolled engine can emit as much hydrocarbon (HC) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) in three eight-hour shifts as a new car certified to California's cleanest emission standard does over its entire lifetime.

Large spark ignition engines are a significant source of air pollution. These engines are powered by gasoline, liquid propane gas (LPG), or compressed natural gas (CNG). They are used in commercial and industrial applications, including forklifts, electric generators, airport baggage transport vehicles and a variety of farm and construction applications. They currently account for about:

  • 9% of hydrocarbon (HC) emissions
  • 4% of carbon monoxide (CO) emissions
  • 3% of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions
  • 2% of particulate matter (PM) emissions from mobile sources

If left uncontrolled, by 2020 these engines will contribute 24% of national HC emissions, 6% of CO emissions, 9% of NOx emissions, and 5% of PM emissions from mobile sources.

Reduce HC and NOx emissions, smog and benzene.

HC and NOx emissions form smog and contain toxic compounds such as benzene. Reducing them will benefit our health and environment, especially in terms of respiratory impairment and related illnesses. Some of these engines also emit high levels of CO, which is especially problematic for people who work with or are otherwise active near these engines. And since many engines operate in warehouses, ice skating rinks, or other enclosed areas, personnel who work with or near the equipment can experience increased exposure.

Improve air quality.

To reduce emissions and increase the air quality, we provide three-way catalyst technology in both integrated muffler form and catalytic converter style to OEMs and manufacturers of record (MORs) since the inception of the Large Spark Ignited Regulation by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB). These turnkey emissions control solutions offer reduced platinum group metals (PGMs) to help stabilize costs.

We also offer the 2-way Purimuffler®, a retrofit emission system that integrates a catalytic converter, muffler and venturi to effectively reduce CO and odor-causing HC from LPG, CNG or gasoline powered industrial equipment.

In the engines, the air fuel ratio will vary from lean to rich depending upon the duty cycle of the engine. By incorporating a venturi into the 2-way Purimuffler®, added air is continuously introduced into the exhaust to insure complete CO and HC oxidation while maintaining exhaust temperatures within safe limits. The 2-way Purimuffler® features direct fit for quick and easy installation as well as an electronic monitor to monitor proper function of the system.
