Most gasoline-fueled vehicles have control technologies (like catalytic converters) that reduce harmful emissions of air pollutants. On-road diesel vehicles manufactured before 2007 do not have emission controls, so add-on "retrofits" have been developed that can be installed on the exhaust pipe of existing, diesel vehicles.
With an average lifespan of 15-20 years, these heavy duty diesel (HDD) vehicles without retrofits on the exhaust pipe, or other control technologies, could be polluting into the year 2027.
This provides a strong case to retrofit these HDD vehicles with modern emission controls such as: diesel particulate filters (DPFs), diesel oxidation catalysts (DOCs) and others attached at the exhaust pipe to filter pollutants.
In many states, school buses are required to install another technology called a closed crankcase system, or CCV (similar to a PCV valve on cars), that is installed on the engine crankcase in addition to exhaust pipe retrofits. The CCV system prevents diesel exhaust from seeping into the cabin of the school bus - reducing children's exposure to the harmful pollutants.
We believe we offer one of the industry's best HDD portfolios of system products that have been evaluated and verified (approved) by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), California Air Resources Board (CARB) and regulators in several European countries for use in diesel retrofit programs.

Current techniques to retrofit diesel engines for emissions standards require the use of several methods, including:
- Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC)
Breaks down pollutants in the exhaust stream, turning them into less harmful compounds. When combined with our closed crankcase ventilation system, our AZ Purifier and Purimuffler® DOCs can reduce particulate matter by up to 40%. Our line of DOC products also includes DZ and EZ Purifier.
- Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)
Removes particulate matter from diesel engine exhaust. Sold under Purifilter®, Purifilter® Plus, Cattrap® and Combifilter® brand names, many of our DPFs are EPA- and CARB-approved - reducing particulate matter up to 90% or more. In addition to catalyzed DPFs, we also offer DPF systems using our patented, Platinum Plus® fuel-borne catalyst.
- Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)
An after-treatment process in which urea is injected into the exhaust stream to chemically react with oxides of nitrogen to create diatomic nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water. Our SCR systems reduce up to 90% of oxides of nitrogen and can meet EPA 2010 and Euro 6/VI standards.
- Urea Injection
Reducing agents (hydrocarbons) are injected into the exhaust stream for applications such as (i) lean oxides of nitrogen traps, (ii) catalyzed diesel particulate filter regeneration systems, and (iii) urea injection for selective catalytic reduction. Our patented Advanced Reagent Injection System, or ARIS®, for selective catalytic reduction reduces oxides of nitrogen by up to 90%.
- Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)
Reduces oxides of nitrogen when starting a cold engine and re-circulates part of the exhaust gas stream to reduce engine-out oxides of nitrogen emissions. Used in combination with SCR systems to meet the strictest oxides of nitrogen reduction criteria, we have patented intellectual property holdings for the design and implementation of EGR/SCR systems and have licensed these patents to several industry providers.
- Closed Crankcase Ventilation Systems (CCV)
Assist in elevating the level of exhaust emission reduction by eliminating crankcase emissions. Our CCV system is a truly closed crankcase ventilation system that effectively eliminates 100% of crankcase emissions at all times.
